Finding a Community of Believers on Campus

This Sunday at my church we had a guest speaker who talked about community and how vital it is for Christians to be living together in love and harmony with one another. In Acts 4, Peter and John (two of Jesus' disciples) are thrown in prison for healing a man in the name of Jesus. The rulers let them go but warned them not to speak of Jesus publicly ever again.

I'm so glad Peter and John didn't listen to them. Instead, after they got out, they went to their friends house and gathered everyone to tell what happened. The friends prayed together for boldness to continue preaching their faith under pressure. Acts 4:31 says, "And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shake, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness" ESV.

Boldness was a word I was repeating constantly in my prayers at the beginning of 2020. The word kept popping up and making me nervous, and then I came to the realization my faith is nothing to be ashamed of. It is the foundation of my life and I will gladly share and proclaim it to others.

As Acts chapter 4 goes on, we see that this group of friends were all believers and followers of the early church. The chapter discusses how they were "of one heart and soul" (verse 32) and how "there was not one needy person among them" (verse 34) because they provided for one another.

Finding this community on a college campus is so important in personal growth and staying connected to God. More importantly, if you do not have this sense of Godly community, how can Christians be effective witnesses to the Heavenly loving Father? John 13:35 says, "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another" (NIV). People are supposed to look at believers as a family where they can be seen, heard, and loved. If we do not show that love to one another than it will not be inviting for others.

College is a time where everyone has questions, frustrations, and hardships. Finding a community of believers on campus is a great start to have an outlet for having conversations, making lasting friendships, and getting Godly life advice.

God says if you follow Him and do what He says, you will be able to overcome anything in life. He does not promise an easy and simple life do not misunderstand me, but He does promise to walk with you, guide you, and give you life to the FULL (John 10:10).

I urge you to get connected and stay connected to a Bible believing church, small group, club, or any other community and pray for boldness to share the Gospel and love with others across your campus.

This is good advice for any follower of Christ. Those who are followers can not be an island unto themselves- we need to seek out this community of believers throughout our lives when we move to a new city, take on a new job... where ever you are in life- seek out a Bible believing church, one who preaches Gods inerrant word.
